Urban Stroll – Leipzig, Episode 3

  • She is the fastest growing city in Germany and got called the “New Berlin” from the New York Times in 2014. Over 1000 year of history highlights the last defeat of Napoleon in the Battle of Nations 1813 or the significant role in the Peaceful Revolution as two examples. Known as trade city since Medieval times it has also a rich industrial history. Resulting in a broad variety in architecture which now is getting restored for the “booming new Leipzig” step by step. This post is part of a series about remaining “Lost Places” which might be fancy and expansive quite soon.

The never finished Harbour

The Lindenauer Harbor was supposed to be an inland harbor but because economic necessities changed during the construction process the waterway connections to surrounding canals were never completed. The construction of the harbor stopped before it was finished and the site abandoned in 1938. Two of the three new build warehouses next to the harbor were later used for commercial purposes.

Today only one of the warehouses remains in use while the other two are  abandoned for about 78 and 20 years. In the past years the abandoned part of the site turned into an unofficial urban adventure playground. You can fish, you can explore, you can paint and climb and you have a pretty sweet view from the roof of the two abandoned warehouses.

Soon the whole site will be demolished and a turned into a residential area with a lot of fancy new houses.
